The Millers travel to Chesham to face Aylesbury United this weekend in game week 10 of the BetVictor Southern League.
The Ducks, named after the Aylesbury Duck, are no strangers to non-league football. After joining the Spartan League back in 1908, they have spent 41 of the last 44 seasons competing at step 4 football and above compared to the Millers 11.
Furthermore, Aylesbury even spent a brief stint in the Football Conference in 1988. Despite relegation at the end of their 1st and only season in the Conference, the team were rewarded with a friendly against the England National Team as a warm-up match for the Euro 88 tournament. Despite a 7-0 loss to the Three Lions, the match attracted a record crowd of over 6,000 to Buckingham Road.
Form
The Millers will be hoping to bounce back after a 3-0 home defeat to league leaders Corby Town. Prior to this though, back to back victories has seen plenty of points coming our way with a tally that took until January to achieve. Forwards George and Tyriq have hit the ground running this season, both netting 6 times so far. Craig and Darren will also be feeling more confident with 2 new huge signings this week helping to bolster the squad.
Despite seeing their unbeaten league streak come to an end at the hands of Biggleswade earlier in the week, Aylesbury's form in the league has been nothing short of exceptional. They sit 6th in the league but only 2 points away from 3rd place and after picking up points from Corby Town, AFC Dunstable and Berkhamsted, they are starting to look like a dark horse and league champion contenders.
Previous Encounter
North Leigh 4 - 2 Aylesbury United, Saturday 9th March 2019
Despite a season that saw the Millers concede 126 goals in all competitions, we managed an incredible double over Aylesbury scoring 4 goals both home and away against them.
The most recent encounter, a 4-2 victory at Eynsham Park in March last season, saw a debut brace for Tyriq Hunte who went on to score a further 4 goals in 7 games. Also on the score sheet was Oxford City youngster Ben Barrett and defender Alfie Grant who's only other goal of the season was perhaps the most important. Coming on as an 89th-minute substitute in our season finale with league champions Peterborough Sports, he made just 2 touches of the ball but his 2nd was an injury-time header into the far corner securing the draw and Southern League survival.
Did You Know?
In 1994, Aylesbury did the unthinkable and reached the 3rd Round Proper of the FA Cup as a step 6 Isthmian Premier side. Beating fellow non-league competitors Newport IOW and Kingstonian in the 1st and 2nd rounds, a slightly favourable cup draw saw history in the making when they had a home draw against FA Premier League team Queens Park Rangers. The tie, having to be played at QPR, saw the Ducks valiantly fight to a 4-0 loss to a team competing 5 tiers above them.
